The Wendy Bjork Commentaries

Having a chronic condition can significantly impact your finances, so it’s important to have a solid plan. This includes a personal inventory of your income, assets, debt, insurance coverage and disability benefit options.

In this latest edition of Igniting your Dynamic Self Series, we continue to examine the prevalence and economic burden of outcomes in employees with MS, short for multiple sclerosis and other chronic conditions.  Compared to employees without MS and other chronic conditions, we, as a group, potentially have higher costs in medical, sick leave and short-term disability expenditures.  Previously we discussed the additional stress surrounding keeping a chronic condition a secret, which you can find in my archived commentaries here:  https://usadailypost.com/2022/09/07/wendy-bjorks-commentary-featured-on-price-of-business-digital-network/

When people are diagnosed with a chronic illness, such as multiple sclerosis (MS), they often feel they need to make quicker than normal decisions about their future. These decisions can include whether to continue working or quit their job when symptoms become too difficult to manage.  The main symptoms of MS are fatigue, numbness, tingling, balance and walking issues which can make it hard to move or walk. In addition, some people experience other problems such as speech and swallowing issues, tremors or seizures, breathing, vision and hearing issues

Fortunately, there are legal protections in place to help someone stay employed with MS and other chronic conditions. The key is to understand your condition and communicate with your employer when you feel the time is appropriate.
