Brittany Runs a Marathon” is described as a movie about a “hard-partying woman receives a startling wake-up call when a visit to the doctor reveals how unhealthy she is. Motivated to lose weight, she soon takes up running to help her prepare for her ultimate goal of competing in the New York City Marathon.” In spite of the weak summary, this is a powerful movie about how challenging life can be and how difficult it is to be an overcomer.

Through much, if not most, of the movie the viewer thinks it is primarily about Brittany’s (with a strong performance by Jillian Bell) physical health conditions. In reality, the goal of being able to run a marathon is secondary to a much more important story. As the movie progress, one soon sees that Brittany has a plethora of problems — professionally, emotionally, even (potentially) psychologically. The biggest problem she has is with trusting others and this is a recurring theme throughout the movie.

All of the characters were cast extremely well. Particularly well placed was Utkarsh Ambudkar, who plays Brittany’s roommate (and later love interest). Every time he is in a scene, he owns it. His character is funny, selfish, clever, kind, he plays all these contradictory roles with authenticity.

The movie is inspired by a true story. It is not your typical success story, where amazing changes would come naturally. Rather, it is more rooted in reality — warts and all — which makes it a much more interesting story.
